DONNA- A homeless family is searching for a permanent home after the father lost his job; the Donna independent school district is now stepping in to help.

The family of six was calling a Wal-Mart parking lot home for a few nights after being evicted from their home two weeks ago. The mother tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS her husband lost his job painting lines on parking lots months ago. The family was then evicted from their trailer home.

Her four children attend elementary, middle and high school in Donna. There is no rule in the books stating that the district has to help students in need but when the district heard they knew they had to help.

"We had pushed out information onto our community partners, our district and the campuses. We collaborated on starting fundraising efforts and reaching out to different resources to try to see what it was that we could do to help," Belinda Vega said.

Belinda Vega is the principal at Donna North High School. She says she and her colleagues' will do anything they can to make sure to prevent any student from not finishing their education.

Vega notes that no matter what their living conditions have been, the children have dedicated to school. She says they have perfect attendance and good grades. A Donna ISD employee found out about the family's troubles and paid for a local hotel to put them up for a few nights. School officials are working with the Housing Authority to find the family a permanent place to stay. For now, a local church is offering the family temporary housing.
