Family Speaks Out Following Carjacking in Hidalgo Co.
EDINBURG – A man accused by police of stealing a car at gunpoint and leading them on a chase east of Edinburg is now behind bars.
Pedro Martinez Jr., 37, was arraigned Friday afternoon before Justice of the Peace Bobby Contreras.
Martinez is charged with aggravated assault, evading arrest and possession of less than two grams of cocaine.
"She was getting tacos and she was heading home," said Jon Talamantez, the nephew of the woman whose truck was stolen. "But the guy got her before she got in the truck.”
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office accused Martinez of pointing a gun at the victim when stealing the vehicle from the parking lot of a store on Monte Cristo Road.
"I don't know what had been running through his mind," said Talamantez.
Martinez remains in custody in the Hidalgo County Jail.
