First & Goal Final: September 15th
HARLINGEN - Any Harlingen victory is likely to make Cardinals' coach Manny Gomez happy. But, you have to figure the former Harlingen linebacker took special pleasure in the way the Cards made a statement win 22-20 over playoff rival San Antonio Reagan on Friday night. Tied at 20 in the final minute, the Cardinals pinned Reagan inside the shadows of the end zone with a punt downed at the Reagan 1. Harlingen recorded a safety to take the win. That's a nice skin for Valley football in the constant battle for statewide respect. The Cards' biggest rival, San Benito, likely retained the top 6A ranking in Dave's Dozen with a solid 31-7 victory over previously unbeaten McAllen Memorial. 5A teams entered week three with a 10-9 advantage over bigger 6A enrollments in head to head matchups. Vela evened the season score with a win in Brownsville over Veterans Memorial. The 5A schools added to their lead with wins by Mercedes over Weslaco 21-20, Lopez over PSJA Memorial 61-7, and Donna over La Joya 16-0. Juarez Lincoln improved to 3-and-0 for the season with a 31-3 decision over Donna North.
