WESLACO – The Government Accountability Office says more oversight is needed to protect the personal information of those with student loans.

The GAO report asks the Office of Federal Student Aid to oversee the loans that are not issued by schools.

KRGV’s Angelo Vargas spoke with the man who conducted the GAO audit, Nick Marinos.

"We basically try to look and see whether not only is the department itself protecting information well but is it also ensuring that others that it shares that information with, that are part of the federal student aid process, is actually protected too,” he says.

Marino explains there was more oversight when partnerships were formed.

He adds students can check on their personal information by calling the Department of Education or by visiting the Federal Trade Commission’s website.
