RIO HONDO – Human remains were reportedly found on a farm near Rio Hondo Thursday afternoon.

The area is located off Center Line Road near FM 106.

Cameron County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and surveyed the area with the help of the Harlingen Police Department, Cameron County District Attorney's Office and a Brownsville Fire Department dive team. They looked into a nearby ditch where the remains were found.

Officials said it's possible that a crew who was working along the canal might have dug up the remains from the canal and didn't notice them at the time.

Farmer Robert Meier said he discovered the remains around 4:30 p.m. while doing some work on his tractor. He said he does believe he did find a skull along with other bones. A plastic band was reportedly attached to one of them.

"It's bone-chilling at first. You don't expect to see something like that, but then again you hope it helps someone find a family member that may have been missing," he said.

Cameron County Sheriff's Office cannot confirm whether the remains belong to a male or female. More bones were discovered in the ditch. A pathologist is currently looking at them.

Sheriff Omar Lucio said they should have more information about the remains next week. He said it seems they had been in the ditch for a couple of months.
