Weslaco - A popular scheme targeting cell phones has made its way to the Rio Grande Valley.

The local Better Business Bureau has gotten reports of the ‘can you hear me’ scheme. Dolores Salinas, president of the South Texas office, said people receive a phone call from an unknown number.

Right away, the person on the other line asks them if they can hear them, prompting soon-to-be victims to say yes. Salinas said they’re recording the call in hopes of using the recording against them and buy stuff in their name.

She said having caller ID can help people avoid falling for the scheme.

“It’s important that you screen your calls. If it’s a number that normally is unfamiliar to you, I suggest you let these calls go to voicemail or to your answering machine… If it’s important enough, they will leave a message, and you can decide to return the call or not,” she said.

Salinas said companies are also creating apps for you to block these unwanted calls. She said they’re an additional paid service in the fight against these types of schemes.

Salinas said people can also ask their service provider to block numbers. She said people trying to take advantage of others typically don’t follow the law.
