Local Fire Officials Warn of Space Heater Dangers

WESLACO – A warning from Rio Grande Valley fire officials for those who plan to keep warm during the cold weather.  

Weslaco Fire Chief Antonio Lopez says with freezing temperatures possible over the next couple of days, now is the time to consider safety when it comes to space heaters.

“Every time around this time, unfortunately, we start seeing more and more structures fires,” he explains.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, between 2011 and 2015, portable and stationary space heaters accounted for more than 85 percent of home heating fire deaths.  

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez asked what tips should the public take to avoid a tragedy.
