WESLACO – Local shrimpers say the season has been slow due to factors such as cold weather.

KRGV’s Cecilia Gutierrez spoke with local shrimper Charles Burnell, who has been in the industry for more than 40 years.

Burnell says several factors contribute to a slow season such as the flood of imported shrimp, regulations and the weather.

Executive Director for the Texas Shrimp Association, Andrea Hance, says the shrimping industry is behind in production by about 20 percent with a leading factor being the weather.

"We're probably losing anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 a night depending on how much shrimp they're catching and the price of the shrimp they're bringing," says Hance.

She says boats can handle a cold front for the most part, but production could decrease if accompanied by strong winds.
