PHARR – The suspect in an officer-involved shooting is now facing an attempted capital murder charge.

The man, identified as a 30-year-old Mexican national, also faces charges of DWI, evading arrest, and failure to identify fugitive of justice.

A man who lives in the neighborhood told CHANNEL 5 NEWS he knew something wasn't right when law enforcement blocked the entrances. He chose to remain anonymous.

“A cop like flashed his light on me to not get down," he said. "So I was like, okay. So I had to return back.”

He said he chose to spend the night at a friend’s house.

DPS troopers said they tried to pull over a man before he took off. According to DPS, the driver lost control and crashed into a chain-link fence near the intersection of Anaya Road and Mould Street.

Troopers said the man then fled on foot and exchanged gunfire with them.

“It was just scary, like, to see. Because this is where I grew up and like, to see like people doing like harmful things around here is just like a crazy, shocking feeling," said the neighbor.

Troopers arrested the suspect on the 800 block of Zavala Avenue.

“It’s like you’re not even going to be comfortable outside, or you’re not even going to be comfortable passing through the neighborhood anymore because you never know what could happen next and next,” said the neighbor.

According to DPS officials, the officer involved in the shooting will be off duty in the near future.

"He will be out for a few days, as per DPS protocol. When a trooper is involved in a shooting he/she is placed on administrative leave,” said Sergeant Maria Montalvo, DPS Spokesperson Sgt. Maria Montalvo.

Montalvo could not specify how long the officer would be off duty.
