LOS INDIOS – The feds are moving forward with their plan to fill in the gaps of the border wall.

A total of 38 gaps have been left open since 2008.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced 28 environmental laws will be waived in order to expedite the project.

“I'm glad to hear they are going to construct gates here. What it'll do is contain smuggling traffic away from the community,” says Los Indios Mayor Rick Cavazos.

KRGV’s Sierra Pizarro spoke with a resident who says she’s not in favor of the project.

DHS released this statement regarding their plans for the border wall:

"The Secretary of Homeland Security has determined, pursuant to law, that it is necessary to waive certain laws, regulations and other legal requirements in order to ensure the expeditious construction of barriers and roads in the vicinity of the international land border of the United States in Cameron County in the State of Texas".
