WESLACO - A new project aims to stop illegal tire dumping in the Rio Grande Valley. The problem has an impact on tourism and waterways. Illegal tire dump sites are also a breeding ground for rodents and mosquitoes.

The Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council partnered with Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties, along with several cities throughout the Valley, for the Road to Recycling Regional Tire Collection Program. The project, which launches Saturday, offers more than 25 tire drop-off sites across the Rio Grande Valley.

Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy county residents can drop off up to four tires per person. Proof of residency, such as a utility bill or driver's license, is required.
