BROWNSVILLE – The National Parks Service wants to restore a historical site in the Rio Grande Valley, but first, it has to cut through red tape.

Fort Brown was once the site of the start of the Mexican-American War. Now, a levee cuts through it and the ground is covered with overgrown grass.

Superintendent of the National Parks Service Mark Spier says the agency would like to restore it, but it will take an act of Congress to do so in order for them to receive the land since it belongs to the International Boundary and Water Commission.

KRGV’s Christian Von Preysing learned a bill for its restoration was introduced in June.

Spier says NPS will do this without affecting the existing levee.
