SAN BENITO – U.S. Border Patrol agents are working with Mexican authorities, after suspects on the Mexican side of the border fired shots at agents.

No agents were shot. The incident happened this morning in San Benito, near FM 2520 and Military Highway.

A Border Patrol agent at the scene told CHANNEL 5 NEWS they spotted two people loading drugs into a van near the river. He said the two tried to drive north, but they spotted Border Patrol agents and fled to the river.

According to the Border Patrol agent, the two abandoned the van and crossed the river into Mexico. We’re told shots were fired at the agents from the Mexican side of the border. Agents found 800 pounds of marijuana in the abandoned van.

“There was an exchange of gunfire on the Mexican side. Our agents in the area tried to secure the scene, so right now we have our team working with our Mexican partners trying to identify who the subjects are,” Border Patrol Deputy Chief of Rio Grande Valley Sector Raul Ortiz said.
