WESLACO – The Trump Administration is moving ahead with one of its most aggressive steps to restrict legal immigration.

The so-called public charge rule could deny green cards to immigrants who use Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers or other forms of public assistance.

The change will likely make it harder for low-income immigrants to come to the U.S.

Immigration advocates say the new rule discriminates against people from poorer countries and will prompt legal residents to forgo needed public aid.

The new rule will take place in two months.
