The UTRGV men’s basketball team extended its winning streak to four in a row after defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road 64-55 on Monday evening, improving to 10-11 overall and 6-6 in Southland Conference play.

The first South Texas Showdown of the season came in early January where the Vaqueros fell to the Islanders, and today they returned the favor to finish the season series with each winning on the other’s home floor.

Freshman guard Julien Gomez led all scorers with a career-high 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the victory.

The Vaqueros played tenacious defense for all 40 minutes, holding the Islanders to 28% from the field and 23% from behind the arc. 

UTRGV is in the midst of a stretch in which the team will play five of six games on the road. They’ll play the third of those road games on Saturday against Incarnate Word. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at the McDermott Center in San Antonio.
