Valley Native Performed at Las Vegas Festival Day Before Shooting
WESLACO – Rio Grande Valley native and former CHANNEL 5 NEWS employee Eddie Garcia performed at the same Las Vegas Festival one day before the deadly shooting.
Garcia grew up in McAllen, his band was one of many performing at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.
He said the tragic event is still setting in, "We do a morning radio show so it was all about getting up at three in the morning and finding out about all this and catching up on what happened and watching it all unfold it was just unbelievable."
Saturday, one day before the deadly shooting, Garcia and his band Bobby Bones and the Raging Idiots performed at the very venue the gunman open fired.
"Us being there on Saturday, it puts us in that place. I watched it on YouTube and all the videos out there and on TV. We were in all of those places."
While Garcia wasn't at the festival during the shooting, many of his friends were.
"It's really just about text after text, people checking on me to see if i made it home and me checking on people that I knew were there. Lucky for me and everyone we know we're all OK as far as we know," said Garcia.
Garcia said the thought of those who came to enjoy music only to be hurt or even killed is unbearable.
"We wouldn't be able to do what we do if it wasn't for the fans and so this hurts us a lot that they went and worked all week and all year to save money for this trip to be in Vegas for this festival and something like this happens it's unfair and it’s heart breaking," said Garcia
While tragic, Garcia said they will not let this event bring down their spirits at any of their upcoming shows.
Garcia like many others donated blood to help the hundreds of injured. He encourages others to do the same.
