The Cameron County District Attorney's Office teamed up with the city of Brownsville to clean up Tres Angeles Park.

The Brownsville park was built on the spot where John Allen Rubio and his common-law wife killed their three children back in 2003. Blue ribbons were added on the pergola, and blue pinwheels were placed in the ground.

The cleanup was part of an Earth Day event, Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz said.

"This park represents the memory of the three children that were brutally murdered here,” Saenz said. “It represents a peaceful setting for the community for Cameron County as we memorialize those children, and in keeping it clean, we commemorate those lives."

Rubio and his wife, Angela Camacho, were convicted of beheading their children: Julissa Quesada, 3; John Esteban Rubio, 14 months; and Mary Jane Rubio, 2 months.

Rubio's execution date is set for Nov. 12, 2026. The defense has until April 30 to file a motion challenging his competency.

If that happens, the state will then have 60 days to respond.
