MCALLEN – The city of McAllen is working on a $46 million drainage system.

After heavy rains, water pools in certain areas where there isn’t sufficient drainage in the city. The project will improve existing infrastructure and add new systems where necessary.

Crews are completing one drainage system between 29th and 23rd along La Vista. Officials anticipate it will be done in the near future.

City commissioners will vote on the next leg of the action plan next week.

“Now for 2017, 2018 projects, we are proposing three projects, three drainage projects and those will go before city commission on Monday,” Community Development Director Piedad Martinez said.

If the CDBG action plan passes on Monday, the drainage improvements will carry a price tag of more than $200,000.

North 5th Street at Hackberry, North Main Street at Cedar Ave and North 16th Street at Ivy Ave would receive funding for new drainage systems.

Fiscal year 2017-2018 begins Oct. 1.
