EDINBURG – An entire neighborhood on the outskirts of Edinburg is looking for answers as to how and why they're being charged for 13 years of back taxes.

The taxes date back from 1990 to 2003.

The majority of the people the irrigation district is looking to collect from, weren’t even living there at the time.

San Cristobal residents are asking why should they have to pay for something they didn’t use or didn’t even own at the time.

Hidalgo County Irrigation District 1 told us they are in the process of clearing delinquent statements and the assessment taxes follow the land, not the property owners, so current owners now have the responsibility.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to Aaron Fonseca, a real estate attorney, about what options those residents might have.
