BLUETOWN - People residing in Bluetown are wondering if their mail service will continue after their mailboxes were destroyed.

People have had their mailboxes destroyed twice in the past nine months. Resident Robert Martinez said he didn’t expect for it to happen again.

He said he’s worried about his mail and the information inside them.

“The little box that I had, I don’t know if it’s serviceable or not,” he said. “We lost two or three letters, payments.”

Cameron County Sheriff’s Department said they caught the suspect from last year’s crime. The man claimed it was an accident and agreed to replace them.

For now, residents have to travel to San Benito to pick up their mail.

It’s uncertain when the mailboxes will be replaced.

The United States Postal Service is currently investigating the damage. Damaging a mailbox, which is considered federal property, could result in a hefty fine of up to $250,000 or prison for up to three years.

The postal service said people should immediately report theft, tampering or destruction of mail or mailboxes.
