A handful of Harlingen nonprofits received a financial boost from the city thanks to $20,000 in funding.

The city awarded the money to five different organizations.

The Literacy Center, the Children's Bereavement Center and the Family Crisis Center each received $5,000.

The Texas Ramp Project and Loaves and Fishes shelter each received $2,500.

The money will be used to address the needs of the non-profits, such as A/C repairs.

“They're not asking for additional money to paint the walls, the Literacy Center is saying, ‘No, we need more books. We need more tutors,’” Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda said. “This is actual, tangible results that we are going to get based on the funds we're providing."

The money the city gave came from sponsorships the city raised during its 2023 State of the City address.
