WASHINGTON D.C. – An elected leader from the Rio Grande Valley said he hopes the relationship between Mexico and the U.S. doesn’t end.

Congressman Filemon Vela said Mexico is the 3rd largest trading partner with the U.S. They’re also the second largest export market.

“To think that in the 21st century you would build a wall between two countries that are allies. That is just a ridiculous proposition,” he said.

Trump recently announced he plans to slash the number of refugees who can settle in the U.S., as well as block Syrians and others from “terror prone nations” from entering the U.S.

“He’s following through on his anti-immigrant rhetoric,” Vela said.

On Wednesday, Trump told legislators millions of people in the country illegally rigged the election.

“Clearly Donald Trump lost the popular vote. But our system – we have an electoral college and he won that,” he said. “So, the idea that you would be the victor and still complain about the process you know we talk about sore losers. But in his instance, I think what we are dealing with is a very sore loser.”

Additionally, Congressman Henry Cuellar reiterated the wall is a 14th century solution to a 21st century problem.
