DONNA – A Rio Grande Valley couple wants the fraudulent calls they keep receiving to stop.

The person who keeps calling is unknown and unwelcomed by Paulette and Celedino Ruiz. The couple said they changed their number but the calls continue.

The caller claims to be Ruiz’s nephew, but he doesn’t give his name up right away.

“And they say, ‘Ah uncle, you don’t remember me?’ I say, ‘No I don’t remember you,’” Celedino Ruiz said.

The caller will sometimes ask for Ruiz’s wife, as well.

The problem keeps happening on three different numbers. First a landline three years ago, then a cell phone three months ago.

The couple received a call Tuesday night on their new landline. The callers knew who to ask for.

“They’ll use that to give themselves more credibility as to they are who they say they are,” Better Business Bureau President Dolores Salinas said.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS looked up Ruiz’s number and there’s one hit on the Whitepages. It gives a name and address that a fraudulent caller can use.

“Sometimes it’s good to pay that extra to keep the numbers private,” Salinas said.

But the Ruiz’s said the number they use now has been unlisted for years. The BBB said sometimes it’s good not just to go unlisted but to change the number too.

We called the number that called Ruiz Tuesday night but did not get an answer.

Ruiz left a message with Donna Police about the calls.

“They want money. It’s all they want,” he said about the caller.

Ruiz is frustrated it keeps happening to them.

“A lot of people tell me, ‘Hey they called me.’’ I know, I know,’” he said.

We’ll be checking with Donna police to see if they can find anything out and put a stop to the calls.
