DONNA – Vince Castillo left Donna High School as a four-time state qualifier and a three-time state medalist in the hurdles.

Today at Bennie La Prade Stadium, a sign hangs honoring the track standout and his accomplishments.

“It was a very good ride,” said Castillo. “I’m very impressed with my whole career in high school. It’s kind of one of those things, you want to go and be the best.”

Castillo’s success is continuing at the collegiate level. As a member of the Mississippi State track and field team, the Donna alum was named an All-American his freshman year.

And on the 4 x 400 relay team, Castillo has made it to the NCAA Outdoor Championships twice.

“It’s an honor to run with some of the fastest guys there,” said Castillo. “Knowing that I’m actually one of the top runners in the country, that’s the best feeling in the world.”

Back in April, Castillo and his relay team took part in the historic Penn Relays. The foursome clocked their best time of the season at 3:04.61.

“We train year-round right next to each other every day,” said Castillo. “Blood, sweat, and tears. To finally put everything together at a track meet, it’s one of the best feelings when you’re running with some of your best friends.”

But Castillo is still focusing on his first passion. This year, Castillo narrowly missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400m hurdles.

Reaching the national competition in the event is one of Castillo’s goals for next season.

“I try to observe and learn as much as I can and what are the best choices for me to be successful in college,” said Castillo.

Because of an injury his sophomore year Castillo, now a soon-to-be senior will have two more years of eligibility left.

He’s hoping to keep his personal streak going.

“I went to state all four years of high school,” said Castillo. “Right now, I’m two for two for the national meet in the NCAA. If we can get four for four, that would be the cherry on top of my career.”

Castillo says he’s thankful for everyone who’s helped him along the way. It’s something he hopes to pass on as a coach in the future.

“I’ve learned a lot in college,” said Castillo. “I want to give back to any Valley athlete that’s hungry for knowledge. I would like to give back and help them get there.”
