EDINBURG – Edinburg CISD will soon be adding a fleet of school buses outfitted with seat belts.

The purchase comes two weeks after Texas lawmakers approved legislation requiring new school buses, 2018 models and newer, to have safety belts.

Alonzo Barbosa, Edinburg CISD transportation director, said the decision to buy 10 buses equipped with seat belts was easy to make.

“We don’t carry apples and oranges. We carry special cargo. In fact, our mantra here at Edinburg CISD is “We carry the future today,’” she said. “And so it’s our children, it’s our special commodity. And so we want to make sure that we afford all children of our district the latest and greatest in safety for our school buses.”

The new school buses cost the district under $1 million. They’ll also come with collision avoidance systems, perimeter cameras and backup cameras.

If a school district feels they cannot afford to implement the law, they may vote to opt out.

The buses should be in use by January.
