HARLINGEN – Several Cameron County fire departments responded to the scene of a brush fire north of Harlingen.

Harlingen and San Benito Fire Department responded to a call at Briggs Coleman Road and FM 508 on Monday. The fire had been largely extinguished by 5 p.m.

Fire authorities said the weather contributed to the flames. Firefighters were left working to suffocate small hot spots left in the area.

The blaze destroyed more than an acre of brush behind a brick house on Briggs Coleman Road. Other homes and a new construction project nearby were also threatened.

Firefighters said authorities have not issued any evacuations.
