People in a Mercedes neighborhood say they've had flooding problems for years, and now, they have new concerns that a construction site in their neighborhood could make it even worse.

For a few years now, residents in a neighborhood near FM 491 and J.A. Garcia say flooding has been a nightmare.

“Any little rain that comes, it floods pretty bad here,” said resident Juan Contreras.

Contreras says flooding means the neighborhood has to upend their lives and leave.

With the foundation being built on a higher elevation, it could cause more flood water to flow down into these homes.

One woman, who didn’t want to be on camera, told Channel 5 News that construction near the area has made flooding worse already, and that the city doesn’t come to pump the water out because then it could make flooding in nearby neighborhoods worse.

Channel 5 News reached out to the city of Mercedes for comment, but we have not heard back.
