A 66-year-old man was arrested on an animal cruelty charge after an injured German Shepherd was found in Harlingen, according to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.

Luis Aguilar, the dog’s owner, was arrested Saturday and remains in custody in the Cameron County jail in connection with the investigation, jail records show.

The investigation began on May 21 when sheriff’s deputies responded to the 28000 block of Baker Potts Road in reference to reports of two starving dogs and a horse.

The German Shepherd was found on the property in a kennel with extensive facial injuries, a news release states.

The homeowner had not been on the property for five days.

“Deputies observed that the canines had no food available and only two containers filled with dark green water,” the sheriff’s office said in the news release. “Based on their findings, including the German shepherd’s severe facial injuries, a small abrasion, the lack of adequate shelter (no cover or roof over the kennel area), the absence of food, the unsanitary water conditions, and the owner's failure to provide necessary medical care, investigators obtained a warrant for seizure of a cruelly treated animal.”

The German Shepherd, Tasha, was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment. She’s now waiting to be adopted at a local animal shelter, the release said.

A bond amount was not listed for Aguilar.
