HARLINGEN – A Harlingen woman is suing the recently indicted Senator Carlos Uresti of San Antonio.

Denise Cantu claims Uresti took $900,000 of her money and pocketed it instead of investing it in the oil business.

According to her attorney, Oscar Alvarez, the lawsuit was filed in Hidalgo County in January.

The senator represented Cantu in a wrongful death lawsuit with a tire company. Two of her children died in rollover following a blowout.

Alvarez said now that the government has indicted Uresti for very similar allegations of fraud. He feels confident he will be able to prove Cantu’s case.

“One of the explanations that were given, was well he's a senator, why should we not trust him? In addition to the fact that they had had that prior business relationship, attorney-client relationship and this is the same person that gave her a pretty good settlement, so there was really no reason not to trust him. It’s taking advantage of someone that's going through a big loss and taking advantage of them at their weakest. That’s what makes this lawsuit very difficult, but we need to hold people accountable,” Alvarez said.

He said out of the $900,000 investment, Cantu only got about $100,000 back.

Cantu’s trial is expected to begin in December.
