AUSTIN – Lawmakers in Austin continue a hearing on a proposed law that could make all levels of government in Texas more transparent.

The House Committee on Government Transparency and Operation is hearing several proposed bills regarding open records law.

One bill in particular, House Bill 792, aims at closing loopholes that allow government officials to conceal contracts involving taxpayer money.

In 2015, the McAllen hired Enrique Iglesias to perform at the Christmas parade.

Taxpayer money funded that event but the city refused to disclose how much. They cited a June 2015 Texas Supreme Court decision that expanded the secrecy of government contracts.

Since the ruling, city governments across the state have used the loophole more than 300 times to deny public access to documents that details how taxpayer money has been spent.
