MCALLEN – A McAllen woman wants the gunfire near her home to stop.

Elaine Ramirez, who’s lived next to the McAllen airport close to 15 years, said she enjoys playing outside with her dog, Nena.

Ramirez said the mood changes in the late afternoon and night when they are forced to go indoors due to gunfire behind the McAllen airport.

“We have to go inside because they get scared of the shots,” she said. "Sometimes it's just ongoing, sometimes it stops and then you don't hear it till later.”

CHANNEL 5 NEWS looked south of her home to try to locate where the gunfire was coming from until we found a hidden place loaded with evidence.

The city of McAllen could not confirm where Ramirez heard the gunfire. However, we found the McAllen mud pits. The spot is an unofficial outdoor motorsports sanctuary.

We spent two days looking around the mud pits and discovered scattered shotgun shells were across the area. On the second day, we also found several new 9 mm shell casings nearby.

McAllen City Manager Roel Rodriguez explained part of the land is inside the city limits and it shares a boundary with Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1. He explained if a property is in city limits it's illegal to fire a weapon.

The McAllen police department tells us if someone is caught shooting a weapon within city limits they can face a fine up to $4,000 and a maximum of a year in jail.
