WESLACO – Local, state and international health officials are joining forces for Zika research

The city of McAllen, UTRGV, Texas A&M and the state of Tamaulipas are working to learn about the Zika-carrying mosquito species and their behavior.

Testing will also determine chemical resistance of the mosquito for pesticides.

“So we’re going to be able to look at that and learn from that and how the mosquito evolves more in detail and also until it reaches the adult stages. So we can be able to learn more about the behavior and also learn how to kill them,” Josh Ramirez, the director of the McAllen Health and Code Enforcement, said.

Ramirez said all the partners involved have funding from either the CDC or other organizations.
