DONNA – A new school year starting in Texas brings new stress for students living across the border.

High school senior Carlos Pineda is a United States citizen.

"Like I did nine hours the other day on the bridge, just by itself," says Pineda.

He and his little brother live in Donna with his grandma.

When she's out-of-state, they stay across the border in Rio Bravo with their mom.

Pineda says he spends a lot of time at the Donna International Bridge waiting in traffic.

"The thing that scares me the most right now is that they randomly close borders," he says.

Periodic closures make Pineda and his little brother late for school.

School district administrators are also worried.

An absent child, an empty seat, means less money for the district and lessons left unlearned for students.
