MISSION – A man in Mission was charged with animal cruelty after a video posted online showed him dragging his dog behind a motorized scooter.

Mission police said they responded to the 3000 block of Sierra Court around 6 p.m. Wednesday regarding the video. They told CHANNEL 5 NEWS a woman recorded a man dragging the dog. In the video, the man said it's his dog and “not to worry.” Police identified the man as 59-year-old Mario Cardona.

Melissa Torres was the woman who recorded and posted the video on Facebook. It's been viewed more than 100,000 times and shared by more than 2,000 people.

“When I was leaving my driveway, my son pointed out and said, ‘Hey, that guy is dragging his dog,’ so I turned around and I literally parked my car in the middle of the street. And I got off my car, and I was yelling at him, asking him what his problem was, why he was doing that. And he was telling that it was not my business. Mind my own business,” she said.

Torres turned over the video to Mission police. Mission Police Lt. Jody Tittle said once investigators saw it, they hit the ground running and went to find Cardona.

Thursday morning, Mission police investigators spoke with Cardona. They told him they had a warrant for his arrest for the misdemeanor offense of animal cruelty.

Cardona allowed officials to take custody of the German Shepard named G2. Animal control checked the dog and said G2 was unharmed. He was returned to Cardona, until G2 was eventually removed from his possession early Thursday evening.

Cardona was taken before Mission Municipal Judge Jonathan Wehrmeister. He received a $10,000 cash surety bond.
