MCALLEN – The city of McAllen is moving forward with an application to get reimbursed by the federal government.

The city said they spent $430,000 helping the respite center.

The center opened at the Sacred Heart Church in 2014 during the first surge of people crossing the border illegally.

Congressman Henry Cuellar said there was a misunderstanding between FEMA and the governor’s office. He said that’s what’s causing the delay.

FEMA recently sent out a clarification explaining how local jurisdictions do qualify for reimbursements.
