Channel 5 News first introduced viewers to Emily Aguirre in 2019 when she was 11-years-old.

She and her family created Emily’s Meals, a group that feeds the homeless across McAllen, Mission and Pharr. Emily was 6 years old when the group started.

“Looking back, I can't even comprehend,” Emily said. “My little 6-year-old brain, if I told her what we're doing now, what it's grown to… she would completely lose it."

In their first year, Emily and her family fed 40 homeless people during the Lent season.

When that first season ended, she went to her priest and told him about her initiative during Lent.

“And my priest said, so what happens on the 41st day? The 50th day? The 100th day? Do people just stop going hungry?" Emily said.

Now, 10 years later, hundreds of people have rallied behind Emily’s Meals to help coordinate, make and distribute meals to the homeless every day of the year.

The group makes 13,800 meals per year.

Beverly Vansuch, 59, and her three children are among the recipients in McAllen.

“I think of some of those nights and my kids' stomachs would growl at night. If it wasn't for [Emily’s Meals], I don't think we would've made it,” Vansuch said.

Vansuch is now living in an apartment after Emily's Meals helped her family with clothing, meals and medications.

Emily said there are several ways the public can help feed the homeless.

“You don't need to be a part of Emily's Meals to help, “Emily said. “Next time you go through the McDonald’s drive thru, you can say ‘can I have an extra burger? And then can give it to the first homeless person you see.’"

Those wanting to volunteer can join the Emily’s Meals Facebook group, or email Rick Aguirre to donate or for any volunteer inquiries.
