Mercedes ISD implementing healthier food options
Some districts are making changes to what students are eating in school.
Mercedes Independent School District students will see healthier food options in the upcoming weeks, and the district says they plan to invite students to taste and give their input on the new food items.
Mercedes ISD spent the summer working on new food options for high school students this year.
An extra salad day was added to the menu and this year students will also have the option of choosing wraps.
The district says before the pandemic, they had a student council that would help create lunch menus. This year they plan to bring it back.
"Introduce certain food items, test them out with them, check to see what their feedback is and of course decide whether it's something that will go onto the menu within the next few weeks or if it's a hit or miss," Mercedes ISD Child Nutrition Director Martha Marquez said.
Marquez says they plan to create the student council in October or November.
The district says during the first weeks of school, more fresh fruits and vegetables will also be introduced. That is in addition to controlling the amount of salt added to recipes.
