Mexican Government Deploys 500 Soldiers Across the Border to Cd. Mier

CIUDAD MIER, Mexico - The Mexican Military announced the arrival of hundreds of soldiers in Cuidad Mier, a city south of the Rio Grande.

The soldiers arrived on Wednesday to an area also known for cartel violence. Officials said 500 soldiers will work with federal, state and city governments.

The soldiers and Tamaulipas Governor Francisco Cabeza De Vaca were also present in a ceremony in Ciudad Mier.

The government said soldiers will help secure the community. An army base was also built for them.

The soldiers came from the Mexican state of Queretaro. The town and the area along the border have a history of drug cartel violence.

There is no information on how long their deployment in Ciudad Mier will last.
