Mumps Cases Increasing: 14 Confirmed Cases

UPDATE (9 p.m.): Another mumps case at a local school brings the total number of cases to 14. 

A case has been confirmed at a Weslaco Independent School District campus. 

Officials have not confirmed which school was affected or whether it was a student or staff member.

WESLACO – A total of 13 mumps cases are now confirmed by Hidalgo County Health Department.

The department is still waiting on 16 other case results.

Chief Administrative Officer Eddie Olivarez says the outbreak began with 29 cases.

Some people who contracted the disease were from the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley; others who contracted it were from other parts of the country.

According to the CDC, there are between 100 and 299 mumps cases in Texas.
