BROWNSVILLE – It’s called “cite and release”.

The Department of Public Safety has ordered troopers around the state to issue citations for small marijuana offenses.

Individuals won’t be arrested, but their cases will still be prosecuted.

Local municipalities are considering the cite and release system too.

Cameron County and other Texas counties are striking a delicate balance with how many people to keep in jail.

Expanding the use of the new system will decrease the population of those incarcerated.

For the state, it’s a matter of saving money while keeping the peace.
