WESLACO – Thousands of people in the Rio Grande Valley will have access to free, basic health screenings until Friday.

Operation Lone Star is underway from Rio Grande City to Brownsville.

Cameron County assistant health administrator Marco Lozano said the primary function of the project is to provide hands-on, emergency management exercise for local and state officials.

He added providing health screenings is one way local officials would be able to help the community in case of a medical outbreak or a natural disaster.

The program is offering dental and vision checkups, including information about Zika.

“In the last couple of months, we have been dealing with Zika. What we’re doing at Operation Lone Starr, we have free Zika prevention kits for anyone that comes in that is pregnant,” he said. “We’re offering free mosquito repellant and free preventive packets for Zika. The message is always prevention.”

Student athletes can also get their sports physical for free.

There is no age limit for participants and citizenship is not a requirement.
