PSJA ISD’s iconic auditorium dome is being renovated.

On Wednesday, district officials broke ground on a nearly $6 million project to restore the Oso Dome.

Built in 1960, the dome was a performing arts center that will be transformed into a state-of-the-art auditorium.

“Following years of dormancy, construction is underway to revitalize the Dome into a modern, state-of-the-art auditorium, set to welcome guests again in Fall 2026 with upgraded amenities and seating for up to 1,200,” the district said in a statement.

The dome's iconic shape will stay the same, and the majority of the renovations are being done inside the building.

“The audio system is going to be new. There’s going to be a lot of technology with the lighting that's going to be added,” PSJA ISD Superintendent Alejandro Elias said. “We've been part of history, we've been part of that dome, and I think it's time for us to bring it up to par so that other students can have that same history and that same memory of the dome."

District leaders say the renovation is about preserving a space that has always been more than just a building. Renovations are expected to be completed by summer 2026.
