SANTA ROSA - A presidential major disaster declared; people in the Rio Grande Valley are concerned for what's next.

A Santa Rosa home is finally dried, and the Ponce family looks through the remains

Carmen Ponce's prayers were answered when the president signed a disaster declaration meaning help is on the way

Just last month our CHANNEL 5 NEWS team were forced to stay outside Ponce’s neighborhood; the water was just too high and covered the tires.

Soon the Ponce family will apply to FEMA.

FEMA spokesperson, Kurt Pickering, tells us people should register now.

“The idea is to get people through the event and onto recovery. Often people think we go and put things back to how they were. That's not what the Stafford Act was set up to do,” says Pickering.

There are three ways to register: call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362, visit their online web page, or visit a disaster recovery center located in the Valley.

Those locations have not been set up yet but it will in the upcoming days.

Pickering says not everyone will qualify, but everyone who was affected by the floods should apply.

He adds the cap per household is $34,900.
