WESLACO – Sexual assault victims will be able to track evidence associated with their cases starting next year.

Starting in September, a new sexual assault evidence-tracking program is set to go in effect.

The new program requires the Department of Public Safety to develop a statewide electronic-tracking system for evidence.

This will allow victims to track the location of their rape kit through the various stages of the criminal justice system.

KRGV’s Taylor Winkel spoke to Rosa Aguirre, a forensic nurse at the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance “Safe Haven”.

Aguirre says she completes rape kit tests on people who may be experiencing or re-living a sexual assault.

She says at the beginning of the month she ordered around 50 rape kits, and today she only has 10 left.
