SpaceX Seeks $5M in Funds to Build Valley Spaceport
NEAR BROWNSVILLE – SpaceX is asking for money from the state to help fund their commercial spaceport at Boca Chica Beach.
They’re seeking up to $5 million for infrastructure at the facility.
SpaceX began construction on the high profile project back in 2014. The Cameron County Space Port Development Corp. recently applied for the $5 million at SpaceX’s request.
According to Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, the new money for the project would come from the spaceport trust fund.
About $15.3 million in state funding has already been set aside for the planned spaceport. So far, less than $3 million has been used.
The California-based company was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk with the goal of reducing the cost of space travel.
Musk initially said SpaceX will invest $100 million at the site predicting it could send up rockets by late 2016. That date has since been pushed to at least late 2018.
