UTRGV Women Get Fourth-Straight Win Against CSUB

EDINBURG (UTRGV) – Playing its fourth game in eight days, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team won its fourth-straight game, 64-56 over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Junior Megan Johnson led UTRGV (13-10, 7-3 WAC) with 14 points and six rebounds. Senior Idil Türk scored 11 points with four rebounds and two steals. Graduate student Madison Northcutt scored 10 points with seven rebounds and three blocks. Senior Quynne Huggins scored 10 points while hitting a pair of three-pointers. Sophomore Amara Graham scored nine points with five assists.

Malayasia McHenry led CSUB (9-14, 5-5 WAC) with 14 points. Alexxus Gilbert scored 12 points with six assists. Vanessa Austin finished with 10 points.

Johnson scored UTRGV’s first six points and eight of the first 11, but CSU Bakersfield led 12-11 after six minutes.

Huggins came off the bench to hit a three as UTRGV scored seven-straight points as part of an 18-3 run to build a 29-15 lead.

UTRGV led 38-25 early in the third quarter on a Türk three, but CSUB responded with a 10-2 run to pull within five at the 6:48 mark.

Northcutt answered with back-to-back layups as part of an 8-2 run to make the score 48-37.

CSUB pulled within five once more at 51-46 midway through the fourth before back-to-back Johnson layups sparked a 9-2 run to push the game out of reach.

UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Seattle U.
