WESLACO - A major effort is underway to prepare law enforcement for gang member encounters at the Rio Grande Valley border.

The program is called Project Safe Neighborhoods Grant Program Authorization Act of 2018 and its intent is to combat gang violence along the border.

Border Patrol Special Operations Supervisor Robert Galvan says the agency already focuses on teens, especially when criminal organizations continue to recruit them.

“You know they're easy targets, they're lured by the promise of easy money. So, they continue to prey on them, and it's concerning to us because this is our community, our kids,” says Galvan.

The project would establish a $50 million federal grant annually from 2019 to 2021.
