MERCEDES – A Rio Grande Valley man says he and other ranchers are working to set up new markets to export their product.

Mike England tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS his cotton crop was devastated by drought and flooding this year. He says he needs his cattle to make up for the loss.

England says to be safe he will be looking at other nations amid NAFTA negotiations.

“There’s countries out there that we need to be pursuing their market even more so than we have in the past,” he says. “Japan could be a big player and the more beef they buy, the better price, maybe, overall.”

KRGV’s Frank McCaffrey reached out to the CEO of CattleFax, a Colorado-based beef industry research firm. He agrees it’s best for England to look for other markets.
