As pharmaceutical companies raced to develop COVID-19 vaccines, they recruited volunteers for clinical trials.

Massachusetts-based Moderna recruited 30,000 volunteers to test the company's vaccine — including 700 in the Rio Grande Valley.

"We had retirees come out, we had a huge geriatric population come out, we had a lot of people in the private sector, we had physicians, we had university professors, everyone that you can think of actually came out for that study and it was really good to see the support for it," said Westly Keating, a physician assistant at Centex Studies, a clinical research network that helped test the vaccine.

Centex Studies is now conducting a study for AstraZeneca.
