Rocio Limon will be a senior at Weslaco East High School this fall. As a senior, she understands the importance of a post-secondary education and is determined to become an educated woman in society. However, the journey to become the student Rocio is today was not always easy since her mother did not go to college and does not speak English. Rocio's resilience has allowed her to overcome the challenges that come from being a first generation student. Over the years, she has leaned on her teachers and educators to provide her with information about college, scholarships, and other opportunities. Through experiences Rocio has become independent and has found ways to help herself by researching about other opportunities and benefits that she can acquire. She continues to challenge herself by taking advanced classes, engaging in school extracurricular activities, and finding ways to give back to her community.

Outside of the classroom, Rocio is actively involved in Student Government, as the senior class president, and in Business Professionals of America, where she recently competed at the national level in Orlando, FL. Rocio has made it a point to join organizations that will help her strengthen her leadership and interpersonal skills; she is a member of the UIL accounting team, National Honor Society, and Weslaco East Masterminds team. For the past three summers, Rocio has been a part of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Upward Bound Math and Science college prep program, dedicating six weeks of her summer to advance her studies. Being involved in these clubs and organizations has helped shape her character by allowing her to develop skills in leadership, communication, collaboration and problem solving.

As of now, Rocio plans to pursue a career in accounting and is eager to see what the future holds. Though the thought of living on her own sometimes intimidates her, everything that she has learned thus far assures her that she can get through it.
